I am an in-network-provider for therapeutic services in New York and Florida with Optum insurances including United Healthcare, Oscar and Oxford. In New Jersey, I am an out-of-network therapeutic provider. Insurance does not cover coaching services. So, what does this all mean?

If you have mental health coverage with one of the insurances I am in-network with in New York or Florida, your therapeutic services should be covered. Depending on your plan benefits, you may pay a co-pay, but the insurance company will reimburse me directly for the services. You may also choose to use out-of-network services in New York and Florida. If you are seeking therapeutic services in New Jersey, payment for your services are due when rendered but may be reimbursable by your insurance company. Upon your request, I will give you a superbill which enables you to seek reimbursement directly from your insurance company. Please contact your insurance company to see if you have out-of network mental health benefits.

Clients often ask why they should pay for their therapy sessions rather than use their insurance. The answer is simple: confidentiality. If I bill your insurance for services, I am required to provide confidential information about you to those insurance companies. This includes your mental health diagnosis, progress notes (records documenting each session), goals and duration of therapy.  This information becomes a part of your permanent record. Additionally, I must diagnosis you with a mental health disorder as insurance companies require this for services to be considered "medically necessary." Insurance companies may also request this information if you request reimbursement for out-of-network services. When you pay for your own services directly, I would not submit any of this information and it remains confidential.
